The Importance of The Sealed Structure Over The Membrane Keypad

A membrane keypad may be used on domestic, commercial or industrial machines. The membrane switches are ideal for handheld tools or portable devices, as the size of the keypad may be compact when the membrane switches are used. Thus, membrane switches are suitable for remote controllers, digital locks, gaming controllers and other handheld devices. They are preferred over other types of switches because of simple structure and compact design. The resistance to pollutants and other foreign particles is another benefit of using membrane keypads. These keypads are economic and last for years due to their unique features.

A membrane keypad is made of 3-6 layers and the thickness of each layer will remain between 0.005 inches to 0.040 inches. The number of layers depends upon the design of a keypad or a client’s specifications based upon the needs of a particular device or tool. A membrane keypad is printed with conductive inks and may be fitted with additional components (EMF screens, LED lights or metallic domes) depending upon the design of the keypad. However, the final thickness of a keypad will be fraction of an inch despite adding these features. Thus, membrane keypads always feature compact design. This particular feature makes them suitable for a large variety of devices irrespective of their size.

The graphic overlay forms the topmost layer of a membrane keypad. Thus, this is an important part of the membrane keypad. It enables users to connect to the control panel and to control a machine. The graphic overlay can be easily designed making it easier for the manufacturers to develop membrane keypads. The graphics designing is performed using different types of software solutions. The design is printed on the overlay with the help of digital printing or ‘silk screen’ printing. Some manufacturers try to improve the aesthetics of the graphic overlay with the help of embossing, engraving or stamping process.

The sealed structure of the membrane keypad makes them suitable for all types of environment. The medical devices are frequently exposed to radiation and different types of foreign materials. The industrial machines are frequently exposed to different types of pollutants or foreign materials. A membrane keypad can be used on both types of machines. This type of keypad is equally suitable for the devices used outdoors, as the sealed structure prevents the internal components from coming in contact to the heat, moisture or pollutants.

The manufacturers use heat seals or acrylic adhesives for the sealed construction of a membrane keypad. The polyester or polycarbonate materials are used during the construction of a keypad. These materials create a barrier against moisture or chemicals and protect the internal components without making it difficult for the users to view the graphics. The combination of heat seals or pressure-sensitive adhesives along with the polyester or polycarbonate material leaves no cavities in the structure or no possibility of ingress of moisture or pollutants.
