Overview of Membrane Keypad: Structure, Types of Switches & Applications

A membrane keypad does not just look different from the mechanical keypads. These keypads also feel and work differently. The mechanical keyboards use switches in order to send the typing signals. This is the main different between a mechanical keypad and membrane keypad. The membrane keypads are made of three flexible layers.The top layer of the keypad is known as the membrane layer. The second layer is made of holes. The pressure passes through a hole whenever a key is pressed and it reaches the third layer where the ‘pressure pads’ are located.The conductive traces are present at the bottom layer of a membrane keypad and the pressure pads establish contact with this layer after being pressed.The conductive traces trigger appropriate command whenever a symbol is pressed.

A membrane keypad may be divided in two categories – full-travel keypad and flat-panel keypad. A flat-panel membrane keypad is used on the control panel of appliances and on fax machines. It has three flexible layers as mentioned above. The full-travel membrane keypads have an additional layer. It has a plastic key-top on the membrane keypad.It presses down on the membrane layer in order to create electrical contact with the conductive traces. The full-travel and the flat-panel keypads cannot generate tactile feedback.

However, there is a hybrid variety of membrane keypad capable of generating the tactile feedback.These keypads contain metal dome switches capable of producing crisp sound whenever a key is pressed.The top layer of a membrane keypad that is fitted with the dome switches are made of rubber or silicone. The inside bubble of the rubber/polyester dome switches are coated in graphite. The graphite coated bubble connects to the circuit that is present beneath the top layer of a membrane keypad and relays signal that a key has been pressed.

A membrane keypad is not just used on the keyboards for computer or laptop. It is used on different types of devices. However, the application of a membrane keypad is mostly seen on the medical devices.The latest medical diagnostic devices and medical tools are fitted with membrane keypads with flat/dome switches.A membrane keypad is lightweight. Hence, it becomes easier to maneuver the medical devices. The membrane keypads are also used on a car’s dashboard, on the aerospace equipment or on industrial machines.

It is impossible for the liquid or dust particles to come in contact with the inner layers of a membrane keypad, as there is no gap between the keys due to having a continuous membrane layer.
